Apprenticeship in New Jersey operates under the auspices of both the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the US Department of Labor.

Apprentices work full time and attend related theory classes a minimum of 144 hours per year. Generally, apprenticeships are from two to four years depending on the trade. Once the apprenticeship is completed, the worker achieves journey worker status. Certificates of Completion are provided by both the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the US Department of Labor. The federal certificate is recognized nationwide.

How Do I Begin An Apprenticeship?

To begin an apprenticeship an employee needs to find out if his/her employer will sponsor the apprenticeship. Sponsorship is an easy, free process. The apprentice registers by completing an Apprenticeship Agreement with the County Apprenticeship Coordinator. Once the employee is registered, he/she continues to work as an apprentice and takes continuing education (related instruction courses) at sites such as Essex County Vocational-Technical Schools.
