The Transition
Center offers community-based instruction in a program consisting of
academics, physical education, vocational training and community
living components. The curriculum is directed towards a student's
successful transition from a school environment to the reality of
full participation within the community.
In Academics, the
focus is on developing Math and English skills which will empower
the student to live independently and competently. Banking and
currency transactions are examples of these kinds of proficiencies.
Physical Education
provides the dual opportunity to promote the student's physical and
recreational well-being. Illustrations of this are the weekly
swimming at Montclair State University and bowling at a local
bowling lane.
The goal of the
Workplace Readiness Shop is to prepare the students for employment
by orienting them within the classroom to good work habits, safety
procedures, appropriate behavior and specific work practices. Work
skill training also includes job application completion,
interviewing techniques, grooming and other related topics. An
important part of this instruction is the incorporation of volunteer
activities within the classroom and group internships in the
community, providing a realistic job experience prior to placement
in our supported employment division.
Community Living
class affords the students the opportunity for travel training and
shopping experiences within the neighborhood, as well as
classroom-based meal planning and preparation and other household
responsibilities. Community exposure and involvement is strongly
emphasized in this component.
The ultimate goal
of these classroom and community experiences is to successfully
place a student into paid employment. To achieve this, our job
developer/coach networks with local businesses and employers to
determine appropriate placement opportunities for students. The job
coach accompanies the student to the job site and remains with the
student until the employer is satisfied with the student's job
performance.
