MESSAGE FROM VICE PRINCIPAL

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration, I offer you my warmest welcome. The start of a new semester is filled with opportunity for young people to reinvest in the learning process and to set new goals for a new school year. This is truly an exciting time for all of us as we establish traditions for our students, now, and for generations to come. As the Vice Principal of this institution of learning I am committed to assisting Mr. Kafele in continually transforming Newark Tech into a national model of urban educational excellence.

During the past few years Newark Tech has become a tremendous turn-around story and has produced some of the most amazing results, rarely seen in such a short period of time in an urban school district. Test scores are at an all time high, character building is a constant, and academic excellence is a way of life. Through disciple, character education, and continuous instructional collaboration, students at Newark Tech are nurtured by a caring group of teachers, and ultimately the most upstanding future citizens of this nation are shaped.

I am again excited about the wonderful learning opportunities that will take place this year with our continued emphasis on academics and best teaching practices, service learning, intercultural proficiency and technology integration. Discipline and culture is the ultimate education of life. Both are a way of life at Newark Tech. Here we are on a mission to help young African American and Latino men and women learn what it takes to be respectable members of a community. Moreover, we firmly believe that along with high academic expectations for our students, it is essential that we develop the whole child by instilling a strong character foundation, establishing one-on-one relationships, and providing connections to their school by encouraging participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and athletics.

I am proud that US News & World Report and School Matters ranked us as one of the top schools in the nation after their careful review of all national high schools. I am also proud we have met our Annual Yearly Progress benchmarks under No Child Left Behind. However, you must know as a leader and your Vice Principal, I am not content to let others set the bar. While performance indicators help us in numerous ways, rankings tell only part of the story. Albert Einstein said, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.” To that end I find it a profound must to keep improving, keep moving forward, and always, always set the bar higher with more goals than ever before.

It is critical and expected that our parents and guardians become actively involved in their child's educational development. As a support mechanism for this we will provide early and frequent contact updates on your child's academic and social progress throughout the school year. We strongly encourage all of our parents and guardians to join our parent-teacher student association (PTSA) as a means of building an important connection to our school community.

I've found that the students at Newark Tech are complex and distinct, each with their own special character. Universally our students have a tremendous will to succeed and improve, and that makes me proud to be their Vice Principal. Thank you and I look forward to meeting all of you this school year.
