Allied Health Programs

Allied Health Programs prepare students for careers related to medicine, nursing, dentistry, and other health occupations. The Allied Health program at Newark Tech provides students with the necessary technical skills, health care competencies, and opportunities, to obtain the knowledge necessary to satisfy the requirements for entry-level health care jobs. Additionally, the Allied Health program has industry partners, the University of Medicine and Dentistry and Rutgers University (Newark). These partnerships provide meaningful internships, summer institute opportunities, and pre-college programs that allow the students to earn college credits while still attending high school.

 

AutoCAD Level I Course Syllabus 

Through a combination of lecture, hands-on exercises and drawing problems, this course introduces the student to computer-aided design/drafting with AutoCAD Release 2007. The AutoCAD topics covered in this level I course include: the AutoCAD graphics window and user interface, dialog box components, drawing setup parameters, rectangular and polar coordinate entry, 2D geometric entities and line types, object snaps, selection sets, the AutoCAD geometry calculator, X and Y filters, display control functions, text creation, 2D editing commands, grips, entity selection filters, and inquiry commands.

 

Objectives:

After completing this course, students will be able to:

·       Start and setup Auto CAD drawings, save and open drawings, use and create a template.

·        Create and use layers

·        Construct accurate 2D drawings utilizing appropriate drawing aids.

·        Create and edit textual data.

·        Perform editing and entity manipulation operations on selected geometry.

·        Select and use various 2D display options.

·        Create paper space multiview layouts.

·        Print and plot drawings.

·        Verify the integrity of drawing data using various inquiry commands.

 

 

AutoCAD Level II Course Syllabus 

Course Description

Designed to build on the skills acquired in the AutoCAD Level I class, this course introduces the student to both basic and advanced dimensioning, and crosshatching techniques with AutoCAD Release 2007.  The AutoCAD topics covered in the Level II course include:  drawing and editing plotlines and multilane, drawing and editing spines, basic dimensioning practices, editing dimensions, creating dimensions with tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerances, drawing sectional views, hatch patterns, and graphics designs.

 

Objectives

After completing the course, students will be able to:

·         Create and draw multilane.

·         Perform advanced editing operations on selected plotlines and pollards.

·         Draw and edit spines.

·         Identify the various dimensioning styles and their applications.

·         Fully dimension 2D geometry using linear, angular, and associative dimensioning techniques.

·         Generate cross-hatched sectional views and pattern fills.

·         Draw dimensions with tolerances.

·         Do geometric dimensioning and tolerance.

 

AutoCAD Level III Course Syllabus

 

Course Description

Through a combination of lecture, hands-on exercises, and drawings assignments, the AutoCAD Level III course introduces the student to the more advanced features pf AutoCAD Release 2007. Designed to provide the student with the necessary skills to streamline drawing tasks, the topics covered include:  blocks and wblocks, blocks attributes, attribute editing, external references and multilane layout, isometric drawing and dimensioning techniques, creation of scripted slide shows, construct 3D solid model and surface mesh.

 

Objectives

After completing this course, students will be able to:

·        Create, manage, and edit Block symbols and attributes.

·        Construct and dimension isometric drawings.

·        Reference existing drawings.

·        Make and view slides of AutoCAD drawings.

·        Use the SOLIDEDIT command to construct and edit a solid model.

·        Create a variety of surface-model objects using the EDGESURF, TABSURF, RULESURF, and REVSURF commands.

 

 

Automotive Technology 

The Automotive Technology Program is designed to enable the students to explore, in a systematic way, the sciences involved in vehicle operation and servicing.  The fundamentals of electricity, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, internal combustion, exhaust emissions, suspension systems, brakes, transmission and drive lines are presented.  It also covers basic information on hand tools, fasteners, measuring instruments, service equipment and meters.  The program provides both theory and practical application, utilizing state of the art equipment,  with emphasis on entry level employment upon graduation.

 

 

Office Procedures 

The Office Procedures Program prepares 11th grade students for the senior year Work-Study Program.  In this office-learning environment, current business practices, technology, and human relations comprise the framework for topic development and class assignments.  Students improve and expand their knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, which includes: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. They create a Portfolio of work projects to present on job/college interviews.  Emphasis is placed on learning job preparation skills such as:  job applications, cover letters, resumes, references, and thank-you letters.  The students are engaged in role-playing interview scenarios and conduct peer evaluations.  Areas of concentration include verbal and written communications (telephone techniques, oral presentations, and various business correspondence—letters, memorandums, tables, reports, agendas, and itineraries).  A simulated filing project is included.  The Office Procedures Program is for one semester (20-weeks). 

 

 

Accounting 

The Accounting IA Program prepares 11th grade students on concepts of accounting in a private enterprise economy.  Business transactions, the basic accounting equation, as well as the basic accounting cycle are covered in this one-semester program.  Students will complete the accounting cycle:  posting to the general ledger, preparing a six-column worksheet, generating financial statements journalizing and posting closing entries and developing a post-closing trial balance.

 

 

The Carpentry Program 

The carpentry program prepares students for in demand entry-level positions in the fields of residential and commercial carpentry. The program also provides valuable skills and information for students considering continuing their education at the college level in the fields of construction management, architecture and engineering. Carpenters who have gained home building and remodeling experience working in the field also go on to careers as building inspectors, builders and developers.

 

Theory

 

Required course reading selections along with lectures and classroom discussions will build a solid understanding of the products, tools and materials used and installed by carpenters in building construction.

 

Required course reading will be comprised of:

·       textbooks

·        handouts

·        literature supplied by product manufactures and trade organizations

 

Students will also complete coursework from their workbooks and textbooks as well as handouts. Each tool, operation and procedure is broken down into an individual lesson.  After studying and discussing the theory related to a tool, operation or procedure, the teacher will demonstrate the lesson, with an emphasis on safety and proper technique.  Students will then have the chance to apply it and practice until they reach proficiency.

 

 

Business Technologies 10

In this course the students are taught the basic lessons in Microsoft Word.  They are taught how to access commands using the toolbars, and how to create and edit various business documents.  The objectives are the following.  Students will be able to:

 

1.      Execute commands for most Word  task

2.      Create, save and print documents

3.      Make format changes to documents

4.      Correct typing, spelling, and grammar errors

5.      Center documents vertically and horizontally

6.      Create documents using word and clip art

7.      Create memorandums and business letters

8.      Format unbound reports and outlines

9.      Create and format tables in various designs and styles

 

The Word processing course is designed for a full year.  The students work for the first three cycles learning to format word documents listed.  During the 4th cycle they are introduced to Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Access. 

 

 

Business Technologies 12 

In this course students are given advanced word processing lessons that will prepare them to work in a business office.  The focus is primarily on getting students job ready; introducing them to office documents commonly prepared in a business office.  The objectives are the following.

 

Students will be able to:

 

1.  Use templates to create documents.

 

2.  Use the various programs to format letters with special features, prepare financial records, data reports, presentations, agendas, minutes, itineraries, mail-merged documents, memorandums, tables, reports as well as review documents processing to pass the OPAC test.

 

3.  Prepare office simulation jobs. Students will assume the position of an office assistant and process documents that meet will meet acceptable business standards.  The simulations are designed to help students make the change from textbook assignments to duties performed in a business office.  Their goal is to develop decision-making skills, follow instructions, compose and assemble business documents from rough draft and unarranged copies, use reference materials, and learn to prioritize work.

Electrical Construction & Maintenance 

A  pre-apprentice based program supplying the student with a quality education within a positive atmosphere.  This course incorporates theory and basic fundamentals  of electricity such as ohm’s law and kirchoffs law, alternating and direct current, voltage, current and resistance. Also, a job-readiness program preparing the student for life experiences and  career opportunities within the trade. Individuals will troubleshoot electrical circuits and complete hands-on work efforts which will be achieved in both residential & commercial wiring projects.  Studies include device wiring, boxes and fittings, raceways, conduit bending, circuit/load calculations, service installations and requirements of the n.e.c. The electrical industry is forever on the move.  Electricians are always in demand. This course will jumpstart your vocation and prepare you for the best, which is yet to come. 

 

 

Auto Body Repair 

Auto Body Repair is a three year course which will allows the student to gain meaningful employment in the Auto Body Repair industry. During the first year the student will learn safety, business structure, hand tools, power tools, specialty tools, paint preparation skills, masking, and detailing.These skills by themselves would qualify a student for an entry level position at any shop. During the student’s second year he is taught minor dent repair, major dent repair, welding, nonstructural analysis, structural analysis, unibody repair, and frame repair. At this point the student will have attained the skills of a three to four year on the job apprentice.During the students senior year he is exposed to refinishing, glass repair and replacement, electrical repair, wheel alignment and suspension repair, and estimating. At this point the student is qualified for many careers in the auto body industry. The present Auto Body Repair Curriculum offers the student to be ability to choose from a variety of jobs. The student can apply to be a painter’s helper but he can also become a painter. Auto detailing is a growing industry and our students are qualified to walk on the job in a detailing shop and become an important part of that business. If an Auto Body repair student chooses to go to a junior college he can become an insurance adjuster for a major insurance carrier. Our students are exposed to these various types of careers through field trips, having speakers brought to the school, and by participating in Skill USA competitions. They are also required to turn in papers on heroes, icons, and contributors to the industry. Owners of shops in the community are also brought in to speak with students as a way of encouraging them to open their own businesses.

 

 

Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Shop 

Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling Shop is a three year program designed to prepare students to enter the workforce as apprentice plumbers.  Qualified seniors can enter the CIE program allowing them to begin working in the Plumbing Industry before graduation.  Graduate students have gone on to become licensed plumbers.  The preparation for this exciting and lucrative trade begins with lessons on safety, tools, and using a ruler.  Students are instructed in the installation of the basic materials (steel pipe, copper tubing, and plastic pipe) used in the Plumbing Industry through the installation and repair of household plumbing fixtures.  In the shop is a full size model house in which students are given a realistic work environment to practice their trade with the actual tools of the trade.  Students develop a strong understanding of the science behind the art of plumbing, along with a background in Plumbing Code (law).

 

 

Music Production 

The Music Production Program prepares students for a world of mass-distributed, digitally enhanced and packaged entertainment in which musical artistry alone is no longer the key to career success.  The students combine vocal music and dance artistry with technical skills in the use of modern electronic technology, to synthesize and produce music based, technology-enhanced entertainment product.  Students first receive training in music fundamentals and voice performance, and progress to both perform and production roles in a range of increasingly complex and sophisticated performance numbers, incorporating live and digitally enhanced music, drama and dance routines, as well as multimedia graphics and video formats.  Students are also provided with instruction in the unique structure of this dynamic business, and given the opportunity to develop self management skills that will be essential for their success as independent entrepreneurs.  They operate in a team environment as producers in a rapidly developing business, and are provided with instruction in key legal and marketing aspects of their future careers.  Career paths in this field branch out to include performance, production and talent management.

The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a comprehensive e-learning program that provides students with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. The Networking Academy delivers web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support, and preparation for industry standard certifications.
