Congratulations to our athletes and coaches for a superb effort this fall.

 

It seems impossible that the 2009 Volleyball season has come to an end.  The Newark Tech Varsity Volleyball Team finished the season with a record of 7 wins and 13 losses.  This season was a ‘building year’ as the team said good-bye to seven graduating starters last June.  Current seniors Bryannah Leary and Brittney Edwards anchored the 2009 team as captains.  Both girls distinguished themselves as dedicated leaders.  A first year player, senior Paola Arce delivered the team to each of its victories with her setting skills.  Paola impressed us all with her athleticism and focus.  Also graduating and leaving us this year are Ta’Tiana Clark, Monica Ramirez, Nancy Argueta, Yandrely Manegro and Chellin Guaba.  Each of these girls tenaciously worked on their games and demonstrated both drive and heart.  The team is proud of each of its wins, and the home games where fans came to cheer were especially gratifying. 

 

There is much to look forward to for the 2010 season.  Coach Benton has been tirelessly developing the skills of the J.V. team.  Juniors Kadaisha Cameron, Denaya Dickson, Carmel Rigour, Stephanie Fernandez, Yasmin Hewitt, Natasha Rivera, Johanna Valderrabano, Claudia Quezada and Skylar Alston will dominate the matches next season.  Not to be overlooked, several key players representing both the freshman and sophomore classes will continue to develop their skills.  The team as a whole will continue to emphasize communication, footwork, positioning on court, and kills.  Look out for a fierce team with impressive skills ready to roll next year.

 

The Cross Country teams season was very successful.  Despite having only one runner returning from last season the team finished the regular season with a record of 6 victories and 5 losses. The top three runners throughout the season were senior Brandon Baskerville, sophomore Orane Morais, and freshman Kareem Woodard.  Consistently finishing in the top five for our team were senior Todd Moore and junior Michael James. Runners that showed much improvement by lowering their running times each time they ran were juniors Dany Bennoit and Juan Correa and sophomore Tamkeen Mcfarland.  Junior Justin Staley was unable to run due to an injury.    The girls were led by senior Jessica Dutan.  Junior Digna Ramos was running well before injuring her ankle.  Junior Nyteasha Mobley lowered her running times every time she competed.
