ABOUT US

The Technical Careers Center (Newark Tech) is located at 91 West Market Street and provides the students of Essex County with an array of alternatives to the general courses offered by their district school. A rigorous academic schedule requires the general student to take four years of Math, a minimum of two years of Science, four years of English and Physical Education and three years of Social Studies. Our Academy and Tech Prep Program enhances the general track by including a total of four years of Science and four years of Math, culminating with Physics, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and Spanish. This sequence of study permits the student to pursue a baccalaureate or associate degree and provides a strong comprehensive link between Newark Tech and post-secondary educational institutions.

Our school employs a modified 4x4 block schedule.  Using a block schedule, instructors teach not only fewer student, but are able to allow students more time on task. Our academic blocks are combined with the following vocational shops: Auto Body Repair, Automotive Technology, Music Production, Heating/Refrigeration/Air Conditioning, Plumbing, Health Occupations, Carpentry, Electric and Welding.  Our highly technical shops such as Allied Health (Dental), Computer Technology, Computer Networking, Computer-Aided Drafting, Electronics and Computer Repair, Computer-Aided Machine and Business Occupations provide Newark Tech students with an opportunity to commence college life or enter directly into the job market.

Students at Newark Tech are evaluated through a Competency-Based Education approach. Demonstration of specified skill competencies and the use of project task sheets enable the students to attain not only a high school diploma, but also a certificate listing areas of mastery.

Newark Tech has the following three major levels of academic programs the Vocational-Technical Program, the Tech Prep Program and the Academy Program. Our Tech Prep and Academy students are students who aspire to attend college; and they take college preparation courses such as Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In addition, they are required to take at least two years of a foreign language.  Additionally, Newark Tech offers an ESL (English as a Second Language) Program for students whose native language is not English.
