The Dedication of  Essex County College’s  Center For Health Sciences Building

On October 7, 2008 the Health Occupations Academy students attended the dedication of Essex County College’s newest building annex, The Center For Health Sciences. The new facility located on University Avenue, in Newark, NJ is the new home for a wide variety of health occupation programs, including nursing, physical therapy assistant and

radiology. A host of Essex County dignitaries and ECC faculty and students were in attendance. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, County Freeholder president Blonnie Waston, and ECC president Dr. Zachary Yamba, presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Center features state of the art teaching resources, such as a hospital-grade imaging center for the radiology program and instructional “phantoms” that are programmable to create patient care scenarios in the nursing program.

Essex County College president, Dr. Zachary Yamba recognized the HOA students, and briefly spoke of the existing partnerships of ECC and UMDNJ ~ School of Health Related  Professions designed to bridge the health sciences curriculum at the high school level with community colleges, the “school-to-careers” and  “2 + 2” model. These partnerships are an integral component of the ECVTS Health Academy program because they provide multiple pathways for high school students to earn college credits, and experience college-level programs through participation in internships and post-secondary summer programs.
