Program Description:

This 5 week summer program will expose students to cyber security/ cyber forensics as a major career option. It will also promote our existing Computer Science, Information Technology, and Law and Public Safety programs offered throughout the school year.

Program Goals:

  • Increase interest in cyber security careers and diversity in the cyber security workforce of the nation.
  • Help all students understand appropriate and safe online behavior.
  • Improve teaching methods for delivering cybersecurity content for K-12 curricula.
  • Integrate a cyberSecurity component into our Law and Public Safety program for the opening of our new school in 2018 as well as our Computer Science program at West Caldwell for the 2016-17 SY.

Incoming 9th Grade Students

Curriculum:

The curriculum will address the Gen Cyber First Principles as well as key vocabulary, learning objectives derived from state and national standards, hands-on activities, technology, formative assessment, presentations by experts in the field, and reflection exercises. The main goal of the curriculum is to develop awareness, promote cyber safety, encourage cyber responsible citizenship, and spark students' interest in the field of cyber security.

The curriculum will focus on learner-centered activities and authentic assessments that allow students to explore,inquire, infer, and reflect. Some of the instructional strategies include but are not limited to think-pair-share, presentations, Socratic seminars, discussions, higher-level Bloom's taxonomy question designs for presenter interviews, and more. The curriculum will incorporate rubrics as well as formal and informational assessments that teachers will be able to use as check points in the learning process (e.g. Pearls of Wisdom, Admissions Tickets, Journal Entries, Exit Slips, etc.).

Demonstration of Learning (DOL) - students will be expected to create and maintain a portfolio to showcase their work and learning progressions. A criteria and rubric will be created and provided so that students know what artifacts are mandatory to include and which are optional. For example, all formative assessment tasks and journal entries will be considered mandatory, along with a writing sample, research clips, etc.
